An Online Course for Inmates!
I wanted to let everyone know that I have been putting together an online class to help out inmates in our prison system. Right now I’m focusing on helping inmates with their federal habeas petitions, but really this is a course for all inmates who are beginning their journeys reversing their convictions. In my experience, there are a number of inmates who do not retain lawyers for their federal habeas cases– probably because habeas lawyers are rare, but also because they’re expensive. What I intend to accomplish with this class is 1) to give an overview of the relevant statutes and help inmates figure out their statute of limitations, 2) then I’ll discuss the concept of “exhaustion of state remedies,”, 3) selecting claims to raise in federal habeas, 4) how to frame your issues and apply the correct legal standards, 5) what to include in your traverse and how to get the court to grant you an evidentiary hearing, 6) objections, and then 7) how to appeal your case if you lose in the district court. I’m also going to create a segment on actual innocence cases. I’ll be providing cases to my students and *hopefully* some sample habeas petitions and traverses. 30% of the proceeds from this class will go to support Hearts for Inmates and also the Palmetto Innocence Project.
